Old Gooner's thoughts on: Arsenal vs Aston Villa
What a great belated Christmas present. Now before I ramble on about the genius that is Cesc and the making of the humble pie that I hope to be eating come May regarding previous comments made about Abou Diaby, a quick thought on the performances of Chewbacca and Traore. Facing some of the sharpest wingers in the league, three of them actually, as Young, Milner and Downing did quite a bit of interchanging, they virtually eliminated them from the contest. On the day, our third choice left back left Villa's first choice left back looking like a Hackney Marsh's pub player...and he's being touted for a world cup place? 'Tis a bit rough on Clichy and Gibbs but Traore is really looking like the dog's bollix and his pass to Theo which led to Cesc's second, was every bit the equal of Denilson's pass last week. We allowed Villa very few chances, bar a bit of a worrying ten minutes in the first half and overall Billy, Thomas and in particular Alex dominated Villa in every area. Manuel was also very sound, again. And then there was Sami, playing possibly his best game of the season. Finding and making space look easy, his was also a performance to savour...but for true Michelin three star fare, Abou Diaby, for the second game in a row.(Yes I did look up to the East to see if a star was rising. No wise men, but a great number of happy gooners with the knockers, including me, a trifle shame faced.) Truly he was immense and so deserved his goal at the end. Regretably it is true that Michelin do not hand out 5 stars, else Cesc in his half hour cameo, would have warranted them. He even put Abou in the shade during that half hour and brought out the best of AA whilst nonchantly slotting two goals. We can but hope that he is not out for any length of time. And so to Pompey. Just pray that it's not a "We only have to show up to beat this lot" performance. We've had enough of that in the past. Gooner for 60 years...
