Old Gooner's thoughts on: Portsmouth vs Arsenal
So we bid goodbye to the noughties with a so well deserved goal from the most improved player on the planet, Alex Song. What an absolute star he's been this year and now with one of Cesc's tricks added to his repertoire (the quick 270 degree turn to give him some space) I suspect and hope that "We've only got one Song" will have a great deal of playtime as we go into the 'wonders' decade. Somehow, "The Wonder of you" now seems more appropriate as our theme song. The game itself could hardly be called exciting. Poor old Pompey faced with a winding up order, back pay apparently not forthcoming and a fair number of spud peelings in their squad never looked like causing major damage and as we cruised into a 3-0 lead with a lucky one from Eduardo, one from Sami which was a gooner classic and a thunderbolt from the very impressive Ramsey, it looked easy, easy. A bit of 'let's be nice to Pompey' defending though with the Verminator just getting a mini deflection to ruin whatever chance Almunia may have had of stopping the shot gave us a few minutes of concern but then Alex's finisher from Sami's pinpoint cross gave the scoreline a more truthful appearance. Good performance all round albeit that the "NEW improved" Abou only had an average game compared with past weeks. But an average game from the "N.i." Abou is so much more impressive than the old Abou having a goodish game that we can let that pass and keep the humble pie recipe to hand. A nice end to the year during which, let it be noted, we lost fewer games and scored more goals than any other side in the PL. One passing thought on the "noughties". Without a doubt the best decade for the Gooners since the 1930s. 2 championships, 3 FA Cups, 1 totally unbeaten season, 1 double, a new stadium, never out of the top 4, no unmanagable debt, a squad that looks capable of going a very long way and a manager who is a miracle worker. Plus of course, the true meaning of the "NOUGHTies" only became apparent on October 31....Nought, nada, zip, sweet f.a., zero league wins for the accursed spuds. Ha bloody ha. Oh it's good to be a gooner. Happy new year all.
Gooner for 60 years...
